Elana Millman was inspired to write Man on Top because of a doomed romantic relationship where she was giving more than she was getting. She fell for the wrong guy, who was emotionally unavailable and she went a little bat-sh*t crazy trying to get him to celebrate their love. The intensity and instability of that relationship prompted her to write as a way to get into his heart and get out of her head.
The book started off as an angry rant for this guy to “man-up” to his feelings but ended up as a sincere love letter from an older sister to all men who may not be living at their optimum level. Elana saw that this man was not alone in his inability to commit and seize his potential greatness. Many others are following the same path and with the same dismal results.
In researching the state of modern manliness, she discovered that a lot of men are questioning where they stand in the world. Few men hunt, go to war and build stuff like they used to. Boys are dropping out en masse, fewer men are committing to long term relationships and university campuses are being dominated by women. It is definitely an interesting and challenging time for the ones with the XY chromosome. Roles and responsibilities are changing and men don’t have any solid role models to follow. Additionally, there is the emergence of the “Conscious Man” and all the acceptance and resistance that comes with it. Clearly things are changing and Elana felt that investigating modern masculinity was something to be explored now.
There are scores of books written by women that do nothing to inspire men but rather relegate them to patronizing, unsupportive roles. That is not the book Elana wanted to write. She believes that the best way to inspire men to change and “be all they can be” is to love them, rather than put them down.
The book has chapters to improve all facets of a man’s life, including:
- Dating, relationships and the all important bromance;
- Health, with notes on diet, exercise and relaxation techniques;
- Fashion and mojo;
- Finances and social responsibility;
- Sex and how to truly satisfy a women;
- Fatherhood as well as caring for aging parents; and
- A dissection of how men are depicted in media.
Additionally, Elana has included profiles of successful men in media, a comic strip called Captain Fantastic aka Mr. Extraordinary, and inserts of how to give a good foot massage, a crib sheet of cool and a love letter to Tom Ford.
Man on Top is a guidebook on how to be a better man in every aspect of life. It is the celebration of being true to one’s self to create more love, ease and authenticity for both sexes. Giddy up cowboy, it’s time to ride.
